Our daughter Amy was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit disorder, and mild intellectual disability shortly before her junior year in high school. This came at a time when we just wanted to think about Amy’s life after high school and developing a “roadmap” for her to follow into her adult life.
We were referred to Child Health Specialty Clinics and met with Family Navigator, Kathy. She reviewed available transition resources with us including REACH, Project SEARCH, and the ACCESS Program, and helped us apply for a waiver for Amy to receive supported community living services. Kathy focused on Amy’s strengths, which include volunteering and working with children at the local museum and church nursery.
Our next steps include setting goals to help Amy complete her high school education and get a part-time job. With the proper supports in place, Amy is on her way to having a bright future.
